Dealing with Spam

Lately, at my church, we have been slammed by spam. We have TrendMicro ScanMail for MS Exchange and it is stopping several hundred emails a day but many others are getting through. I have set up some rules based on some emails that I have seen people have received and I saw late last week that these new rules stopped at least 200 emails.

I would rather be more pro-active about this than reactive, I don’t want any users to receive spam at all, obviously, but the amount that is getting through is totally unacceptable. Last week, I did discover that the engine was not being updated and had not been since December of last year. I thought the problem was solved, I updated everything, changed the update time from 11:00pm to 6:00 am, thinking it must be conflicting with something running at that time of the night. Now I’m getting daily updates but still getting slammed.

I’m just wondering what others are using to block spam to find an effective solution. Coincidentally, our TrendMicro license is up to be renewed right now, so I either need to correct what we currently have or drop it and go with a new solution. I would rather have some overlap, but I’ll have to see how things fall together.

Ideally, it would be easiest to stay with TrendMicro, since we use them for virus scan also, but obviously it’s not working effectively in the spam area. I am researching with trend Micro to see if there is more I can do with what we have.

I also wonder about Exchange, if there is something I can set differently to help out. Honestly, Exchange is something I have avoided til now, since there were no problems there but now I can’t do that any longer. In my master plan in my head of everything that needs addressed, Exchange is on the horizon and closer to the top of the task list, but it wasn’t quite there yet…….. but it is now.

So any insight anyone has in this area is greatly appreciated. An enterprise spyware solution is also on the horizon, but I’ve got a much better handle on that area and have an idea for a solution for that. First things first, spam for now.
