I’m in the process of setting up a team of volunteers to run sound and video for our 3 Children’s worship services. Currently, there is 3 of us to cover 3 services and I would like to get at least a couple more. It would be nice to have 2 of us for each service so we could rotate. I have been training the newest volunteer, so that means I am staying for 2 of the services, but he’s on his own this Sunday since I’m out of town. He’ll be fine.
I’m also in the early stages of creating a volunteer team to help me with everything else I do around the church. I have done quite well on my own, but I know I need to step out of my comfort zone and allow others to have a chance to serve along with me. Plus, I’m at a point where I’m not keeping up with what needs to be done, so some backup will be good.
I have a couple of people in mind and my initial task is not a technical one at all. I have spent the past year or so getting a handle on the hardware in the church and inventorying all of it. That is a never ending job in itself, but at this point, I need to do a physical inventory of everything, basically go around to each PC, monitor, printer etc and verify that the inventory number I have in my database matches what’s on the piece of hardware. This is necessary because I have redone my database at least twice, getting it to work as I need it to and things are good now, as far as that goes. Plus, we have moved some PCs around and they have been reassigned, so I need to make sure everything syncs up.
My thought is, if I get at least one person to help, it will give them a taste of what I’m doing and their role in this ministry. If they dig it, then cool, we proceed, if they don’t, then they can decide to not continue and it’s not an issue. Once I get a core team of people, I can increase their responsibilities and alot of this, I believe, will depend on their heart for this ministry and their desire. I can’t just set someone loose on the network, then come to find out, it’s all a game to them and they are not taking things seriously. There is access to too much sensitive information, also, one careless move and something can be hosed up, simply by not paying attention.
I have been praying about this, asking God to lead me to a couple of people with a heart for this ministry and the availability and willingness to serve and this week it has struck me. I’ve got 2 other guys who are at least somewhat technical in nature helping me out Sunday mornings, perhaps I don’t need to create 2 volunteer teams, one may be enough. We’ll see……my life is on hold in that regard for the next week, until I get back in town, then I’m all over that.
By the way, if you are in a leadership position in church and haven’t read Simply Strategic Volunteers, you need to. This book makes the concept of finding and leading volunteers crystal clear. As I mentioned before, buy all 3 books, Simply Strategic Stuff, Simply Strategic Volunteers and Simply Strategic Growth, they all have good, practical info. In fact, I have read them and now loaned them out/given them away to others in ministry.
Here’s some pics of our children’s worship service this past Sunday. Enjoy!
