Real Tech Matters

This is something I have been working on for quite some time and it’s finally ready for prime time, I think.

Way back, many years ago……ok, 5-6 years ago, I did some part time consulting. A buddy of mine and I came up with this idea in the late 90′s to start custom building and selling computers. We saw the wave and the excitement and wanted a piece of it. So we got our website up and running and we did a good job of breaking even.

As time went by, it seemed that we were spending a great deal of time building PC’s for little return. About the time my partner decided to bail out, I was changing my focus to consulting.

That’s a fancy way of saying that I fix whatever problem somebody is having with their computer and also educate people on basic maintenance, security etc. That was really fun back then and more rewarding than trying to mass produce PC’s and compete with the big boys.

Over the years, things have changed, I have moved, blah blah blah, and I have found myself right back where I used to be. Helping people, educating them, equipping them and making sure that people can do what they need to do with their computer. We are all much more dependent on our computers these days and many people don’t want to be bothered when it’s not working like it used to.

So, I am back into doing the things that I enjoy doing. I have a website and I’m talking it up with everyone I talk to and getting the word out. I’m no different than most people, ideally, I want to do this kind of thing full time, be my own boss and be able to support my family with it and break out of corporate America. This is the place to start, on the side, in my spare time.

So, why bother telling you, my faithful reader, who is more than likely anywhere in the world that I am not? (By the way, if you are near me, and having computer trouble, give me a call!) For the rest of you, I tell you this because on my site is a couple of pages to walk you through some simple steps to make your computer secure and keep it that way with several free utilities that can be downloaded. Plus there is a pdf file that allows you to print the document and/or save it to your PC. It’s available for you to use, pass around, direct your friends and colleagues to, etc. It’s free too. Right now, it has Church Tech Matters all over it because back when I did it, this blog is all I had. I need to redo it for Real Tech Matters and get that out there but the info on it won’t change, just the headings.

By the way, the utilities referenced in the document are intended for individual use, not businesses or churches, so this is not intended as a solution for a church environment. Be aware of what you install at your church because many freeware or shareware programs make it clear in their EULA that it is for individual use, not corporate or non-profit use.

I created the document out of necessity because I was telling people on a regular basis to do these things, so now when I am educating them on PC Security, I hand them this document. So I created it for me but I’ll share with you.

So, there you have it, my project is taking shape and it will probably continue to evolve and morph into something different than what it is now, but that keeps it fun.
