Music is such a big part of my life, it has been since high school and probably before that. It’s been fun lately to reminisce think back on music from the 80′s. What a great time that was. It has got me to thinking about what has really changed.
Of course, for me, a lot has changed, then again, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Lately, I have chosen the music I listen to more intentionally, however, I still like to crank the stereo in the car up.
I remember back in 2000, when our church in Tulsa finally called a new pastor. He was a young guy (he’s still younger than I am) and he was fairly open and straight forward from the beginning. I don’t remember the context, but it seems like it was a Sunday night deal and he said he listened to a certain classic rock station every morning on his way to work and he liked to jam.
Wow! That blew me away. A pastor that liked classic rock music and admitted it. This guy can’t be half bad. I had never really talked to my pastor, any pastor, let alone felt like I had anything in common with him. We became pretty good friends in the time I was there and he was the first to teach me that pastors were really just regular guys and they could jam if they wanted.
I am much more ministry minded now than I was back then and I’m more in tune with the church in general, as well as the pastors and other servants, both in my real life and in my blog life.
Since I recently came clean and shared the list of songs I listened to in ’86, I thought I would tell you what I listen to now.
Bon Jovi, Springsteen, ………. Oh yeah, there’s more. Nowadays, along with the good old standbys, I like Chris Tomlin, Kutless, Casting Crowns and my current favorite has got to be Matthew West. His songs tell stories and they are threaded together to create a theme. His most recent release is called History and there’s a reason for this. It’s a look back, for him, of where he has come from, how he got to where he is now and where he’s going.
There’s a song called Light of Eternity that I have heard alot but it never connected for me until last night. I was driving home and that song was cranked, I mean cranked up and I’m jammin’ (I’m probably not singing, and even if I was, you already know too much, I can’t bare any more of my soul!) For some reason, last night, this song connected with me and it is so real and relevant.
I won’t bore you with the lyrics, but it talks of how we occupy our time with meaningless stuff and we need to hold everything up in the light of eternity. Good stuff and it really hits home for me right now. How much am I doing that is a waste of time and what will it mean in the light of eternity? Make it count! It all matters.
So, now I’m throwing it out to you……..what are all you 80′s rockers and otherwise out there listening to today? (even if you were 7 years old in ’86)
1986 was 3 years before my days as a college DJ (talk about TMI) and 5 full years prior to salvation (things do change, Jim). I was listening to Howard Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Timbuck 3, Prince (oh, Lord!), The Housemartins (brilliant), Beastie Boys, Peter Gabriel, Alphaville, etc. I tended to gravitate to the European side of music, because it was a very different sound and I liked it. My favorite station today on XM is Fred (44) because it plays a ton of that music tagged as “Classic Alternative”.
Also, back in `86, I had a streak of Rock`n’Roll appreciation by really getting into Led Zeppelin and Rush. I still like Rush- it’s cerebral rock with lyrics like “He knows change is not permanent, but change is” Fantastic!!
I forgot all about Rush, they are truly the best of the best. That then reminds me of April Wine and Billy Squire, he is a one hit wonder and that one song is rolling thru my head now!
For me, anything Michael McDonald, Robert Palmer, Billy Ocean or Peter Gabriel are definitely ones to grate my nerves, sorry about the last one there, Stu!
Nah, you’re just an old man
launchcast.yahoo.com is a good way of reminiscing what music you liked to listen to.
I’m still listening to Petra, newsboys, Kutless, Audio Adrenaline, Switchfoot to name but a few.
