Wrong number dilemma

My cell phone just rang, it was clearly a local number but not one I recognized, so I took the bait and answered the phone.

Me: Hello
Caller: Is Stephanie there?
Me: You have the wrong number.
Caller: (without hesitation) Oh, do you have a number I can reach her at?
Me: (stunned silence as I processed the bizarre question, then…) You called the wrong number.
Caller: Oh, uhhhh……click

Wow, I’ve never had that happen. I think the caller realized what she asked after she asked it and became flustered. I was as pleasant as I could be, I wasn’t upset sounding or anything, I was just stuck as to what else to do. I probably should have confirmed the number she intended to dial and she would know if she simply misdialed or if Stephanie had ditched her. Of course, I have had my number almost exactly 1 year, so if I do have Stephanie’s old number, she has long since moved on, without informing her flustered friend.

I wonder if that’s how God feels when we persist in pursuing our own goals and desires.

Me: God, please bless me in this goal I have
God: You’ve got the wrong number
Me: God, why is this not working out like I planned?
God: You’ve got the wrong number
Me: God, why aren’t you there when I need you?
God: I am here, stop and listen to me, I will show you my will, which is way better than this pitiful mess you have gotten yourself into. (ok, that may not be God’s exact thoughts, but you get the idea)

The difference is that God has the right number, we just have to slow down, be still and listen.

This is probably warped, I know, but I also know I have spent most of my life pursuing my goals, without regard to God. I held God on the surface, but, of course, I know better how to reach my goals and can easily do it on my own. I can look back now and see that I have taken alot of effort for no real success in the end.

The point I am at now, I am allowing God deep into me so He can form me into what He wants so He can lead me to places I could never imagine.

I’ve got more thoughts on this, but they will come later. Phone’s ringing again, who is it this time????

Well said. I’ve quit telling people that God has a wonderful plan for their lives. Now I say, “God has a wonderful plan and he would like for you to be part of it.” Subtle, but significantly diufferent. I stole the idea from Glenn Kreider.
