From: Who?

Gmail has done it again. They are continually adding features and many of them are pretty cool. I always try to watch when the ‘New Features’ link shows up and lately, nothing new has gotten me excited. A couple of days ago, I saw something that grabbed my attention.

You can now set up different From: addresses. So? Honestly, it’s another step in the direction of becoming a full fledged e-mail client.

If you’re a gmailer, just go to Settings, Accounts, then add your e-mail address. You can even specify a different reply-to. They will then send you an email at this other address, you grab the code they sent you and enter it. Voila!

My other email addresses already forward to Gmail, so I have been able to keep up with everything from Gmail, then I had to go to that other email address to respond. Now those days are over. I’m doing it all in Gmail.

Here’s what Gmail says:

Be yourself
@gmail.com, or @yourschool.edu, or @yourcustomdomain.com. Now you can customize the ‘From:’ address on your outgoing messages to display another one of your addresses instead. Use any alias or email address that you own, but do all your sending from Gmail.

For me, there is added benefit, I don’t particularly like my Gmail address, my first choice was taken, so I settled for second best, at least for my main address. I have another one or two addresses that I like better and would rather use, but cannot easily access them everywhere. Now I can. You can do the same. Plus, all your email will be stored in your Gmail account, which you currently have over 2.5gb. I know I’m using 743mb, so I’ve got plenty of room for more.

Here’s a real benefit, if you are simply not an email junkie like me. If you have an email account that has no web access, forward it to Gmail, set up your From:, make it the default and there you go. Think of the possiblities! Does your church staff have web access to their email? If they don’t, they do now, pretty simple solution.

If you haven’t tried Gmail yet, give it a try, many great features.
