Gmail language matters

Recently, I pointed out a new feature of Gmail, the ability to change your From: address. This is a great thing, in my opinion, so I can now send e-mail from Gmail from multiple e-mail accounts. Since I was already forwarding multiple e-mail addresses to Gmail, now I can send and receive, all within Gmail and have a central place where all of my e-mail is stored. To quote myself(I don’t think I have ever done that before!), here is what I said:

If you’re a gmailer, just go to Settings, Accounts, then add your e-mail address. You can even specify a different reply-to. They will then send you an email at this other address, you grab the code they sent you and enter it. Voila!

Pretty simple, eh? However, I now know there is a catch, which I did not consider. This works great, if your language in Settings, is set to English (US). Adrian, aka PC Doctor, points out that he tried this and had no success. Mike Little came along and cleared up the confusion. If your language is set to English(UK), then these features are not available.

What’s up with that? Apparently the language affects more than just the language it displays, it takes you to an entirely different application.

C’mon Google, it appears you are adding unecessary work to yourselves and witholding features from many others.

One thing that might work, if you are from the UK, is switch to English(US), add this feature, set up your e-mail addresses, then switch back. When I switched to English(UK), I still had the functionality, but did not have the settings.

I can’t imagine what the real difference is in these 2 locales is, as far as Gmail goes. As Mike points out, our(US) deleted items are called Trash and their(UK) deleted items are called Deleted Items. In my quick glance over, I don’t notice anything else really different and I would imagine that all of us, between at least these 2 countries, could agree on what to call our deleted items to simply use a single code base and all get the benefits of the latest features.

Deleted Items or Trash……..hmmmmmmm tough decision, it’s a toss up!
