Bloglines still has the upper hand
Posted on October 19, 2005
I have been trying to give Google Reader a fair chance. I think many of Google’s products are worthwhile and valuable and oftentimes, very useful. I have also mentioned that I love beta testing new products.
With that being said, there are some issues still with Google Reader. I actually have one primary complaint. Lately, I haven’t really had time to keep up with reading blogs, so I read some here and there, when possible. Therefore, I have alot of unread posts. I’m the kinda guy that likes to know the goal that I’m working towards and in the case of blog reading, I like to know how many more are left. That way I can blow through them and get caught up or leave it for later, but at least I know.
Bloglines allows that, Google Reader does not. I always know where I stand with Bloglines and that makes me feel good. All I get from Google Reader is something like ‘Item 1 of more than 14′ then ‘Item 11 of more than 29′, then ‘Item 25 of more than 45′. Lately, regardless of what I do, I never get to the end. It’s neverending!
That’s what makes beta stuff fun is watching them improve over time. However, this may or may not be a flaw, it may just be my obsessive nature, which is probably something that can’t be cured in this space!
Needless to say, Bloglines is back to being my primary feed reader, until Google can accomodate my quirky nature.

I completely agree! I found the same problems when I tried to start reading my feeds through the Google Reader.
I love how Bloglines let me read entries and quickly lets me see how many unread items are left in each feed and each category of feeds. When I imported my OPML feed into Google Reader from Bloglines it seemed to register all the categories, but doesn’t let me sort or manage by them.
The one thing that I wish Bloglines would let me do is to click somewhere and view just those items I’ve tagged as “Keep as New”. They’ve changed their numbering system to let you know the different count for unread items and “Keep as New” items, but don’t offer a quick way to get back to them.
If nothing else, Google Reader can always be your backup in case Bloglines ever does their “whoops, you’re gone” trick for real.
