Google Base, still under wraps
Posted on October 27, 2005
Google Base is on the verge of becoming a reality. Many people are probably unaware of what this is unless you are a geek with too much time on your hands. (I know people like this, trust me, you don’t think I found this info out on my own, do you?)
The bottom line is nobody is absolutely sure what this is but there is speculation that it will be a combination of Craig’s List and eBay, basically a place where you can track anything you want or sell your car or sell your Aunt Martha’s knitted mittens. It lets you define the data you are storing in whatever way you want. Those that know are not saying much and what they are saying is vague. Google Blogoscoped and Google Rumors have specifics, among many other sites, but it’s still just speculation.
This will be interesting to see how it unfolds. I was able to get to a login screen just now, but it just kept returning me to the login screen. Earlier today and yesterday, all I got was a 502 error page. It’s been speculated that maybe Google is aiming to take on MySQL open source database, which happens to be the database behind this blog and many other sites.
Competition is good, it raises the bar and makes things better for us, the end-users.
