Safety Training
Posted on November 2, 2005
Growing up, I didn’t wear a helmet when I rode my bike and growing up in western Colorado, I was mountain biking way before mountain biking was cool. Wearing a helmet was unheard of and any kid wearing a helmet would have been laughed out of the neighborhood.
Do my kids wear a helmet when riding their bikes? You better believe they do.
Do I wear a helmet nowadays? You better believe I do.
Do I think I need a helmet to ride my bike around the neighborhood with my kids? Probably not for safety reasons, but I do need it for the example it sets. They watch every move I make and pick up on any inconsistencies.
Ok, enough rambling, here’s the point.
Perry Noble wrote a post yesterday titled Playing it safe where he brings to light how we seem to have gone overboard in the name of playing it safe. Perry very eloquently sets the stage, then lays it out like this:
My question is this–where does safety play into Christianity? Seriously–haven’t we all prayed for safety at times? My question is exactly where in Scripture are we commanded to play it safe? I personally believe that playing it safe has caused the church in America to be viewed as a fossil rather than the unstoppable force that God designed it to be.
You’ve got to read his post to get the full impact of the point he is making. Near the end, he says this:
You may be wanting to start a church…I’ve been there, it was one of the scariest times in my life. BUT you want to wait until you raise all the money you need–you want other churches to support your dream…you want a staff of 10 from day one…and so you will not do what you know God is calling you to do because you desire to be safe.
For me personally, I have no aspirations to start a church, but the above statement rings true in every other way to me. I do believe that God’s will for my life is taking me in a new direction. He has given me some dreams, desires and passions for something more than what I’m doing now and I am torn.
- Plan A - Play it safe and just be happy with what I have and maintain status quo
- Plan B - Just do it. Step out, let go of the known in my life and step beyond myself and do these things that are way bigger than I am, which forces me to leave it all in God’s hands and totally let Him lead me.
Plan B is where I want to be and where I need to be and I am taking steps in that direction, however, I’m still holding on to the world I know because of the safety factor. The trick is being sure that the voice telling me that now is the time to let go of the known and jump into the unknown is the Holy Spirit prompting me and not just me prompting me.
Enough about me, go read Perry’s post, his conclusion is classic and it’s a huge wake-up call.
