Recently, one of the users at my church started having message boxes come up during shutdown. One was something to do with a recent update to TrendMicro, which is our virus scan software and another was related to an HP printer that has recently self destructed and has been replaced. However, the 3rd one is the one I thought I would bring to light here because it is potentially a little more universal.
CiceroUIWndFrame was the title on the message box and it was one of those that said Windows cannot shut down and your buttons are ‘End Program’ and Cancel. After pondering what this might mean, the solution came to me. Ok, well actually, I Googled it and then the answer came to me. The answer was found at Google Answers, among other places. The CiceroUIWndFrame process is related to the speech and handwriting recognition functionality in Office XP. Apparently, a recent Windows Update did something to cause this anomaly.
The solution, turn Speech and Handwriting recognition off in Office XP. To do this, go to Add/Remove programs, click on Office XP, click Change, wait for the tree with all the nifty features that Office XP offers, click on "Office Shared Features", then "Alternative User Input", then disable both Speech recognition and Handwriting recognition, click next or Finish or whatever it says….finish the steps required and Voila! Problem solved.
Since the average user does not use speech or handwriting recognition, then it’s not an issue. I expect this may come up again and you may actually encounter this as well, so there’s the answer. I have to wait and see if all the errors on this PC are resolved since I am never able to replicate them. I had the user leave the PC running when it happened, so I could go in later and capture the errors. There was more going on there than what she indicated but I think things are under control now.
