I just installed the hashcash plug-in to block comment spam. Let me know if it causes any issues. I tested it briefly, the only difference is the link below the comment window back to the hashcash site. If this proves to be effective, I’ll turn off comment moderation for first time commenters.
So keep it coming, spammers, just give it your best shot.
