As some of you have already noticed, my last post on here is from Dec. 8, when in reality, the last time I posted was Jan. 7. This is due to a combination of working feverishly to get a new site ready to go live, probably one too many late nights and a slip of the finger. The end result is my blog was wiped out. That, in and of itself, should not be that big of a deal, we all regularly back up our data, right?
Ok, I’m sure you do, that is admittedly, a weakness I have, can you guess when my last backup was? If you guessed Dec. 8, then you are correct. So, that is where things stand right now. Quite honestly, I have not been that impressed with the things I have written in the past month anyway, it’s been more reflective than technical. That’s mainly due to my focus being on this other site I have been working on, which I will talk more about soon. I am seriously in transition mode lately, seeking God and understanding where He is leading me and my new site is part of that. So, there is not that much that I have lost in the past month. There are a few key posts that I know I can get off of Bloglines and I will probably just repost them, so you will probably notice some repitition, but it will just be a few. The 2 posts from Saturday were good and I will repost them, for sure.
My blog has been in WordPress for about the last year and I have been fairly happy and WP 2.0 is a nice upgrade. That’s probably the best benefit of this latest mishap, I was reluctant to try to upgrade too early, it just came out in the last week or 2. I can’t speak about how seamlessly it upgrades, but a fresh install is easy. But now with what has just happened and losing my cool template, which Mary probably has on CD, but don’t have it where it’s easy to get to, I will probably find a new look. I kinda like the template I found yesterday, I’m still tweaking it but it has a lot of cool features. I’m also considering changing platforms, I am still a cheapskate, so I don’t want to pay for anything, I have looked at some other platforms in the past but nothing has really impressed me. However, Mary was saying that TextPattern looks interesting and I want to look at it closer. Anyone know anything about TextPattern? I know GodBit uses it and they have a clean looking site.
So, I will be looking at making that change soon. Not all that much has been lost, I guess, just another real world reminder of the importance of regularly backing up your data.
Wow, lots for you to mull over there, Jim. Bummer about dropping those database tables.
I’ve used Textpattern a little in this past, like you, just because I was wondering what the fuss was all about. I enjoy TP and I think it’s powerful and relevant in some applications, but I’m not sure I favor it over the simplicity (and community and templates and plugins and support and admin interface) of WordPress. Also, I have gone through the WP 2.0 upgrade (on about 4 sites so far) and the process is fairly simple, just about as easy as that famous 5-minute install.
I use Textpattern a lot – including a number of ministry sites, and I love it.
It is maturing at a very fast pace, has a committed team of coders and testers, and one of the best support communities I’ve come across.
I’ll happily admit that I haven’t used any other CMS or blogging tool, but I have set up WP and MT for a few people.
What keeps me sold on TXP is the flexibility. I can build a non-blog site (that doesn’t look like a blog site!) just as easily as a blog…
Great stuff…
Hey, Mr. CTM! Love the new look – even if it did come at a price! Talk to you later – Stu
