Windows gripe
Posted on January 9, 2006
I’m going to take a few minutes to complain. I am aware that I have very little control over my PC at my office and I don’t worry myself too much about it. This is one place where if my computer breaks or if something is not updated correctly, it’s out of my hands. I reluctantly accept that.
Last week, as you may well know, Microsoft came out with the WMF patch and they released it a week before patch Tuesday.(tomorrow) It’s a critical update and you should have already installed it and moved on. If what I’m saying is news to you, visit this page and follow the instructions, the Windows Update page will tell you what you need to be up to date. If you are set for automatic download and install, it may have occured without you knowing, however it does require a restart. Most Windows updates lately occur behind the scenes without a restart.
My PC’s at home updated automatically last Wednesday or so, and I was prompted for a restart. That’s all cool, I’m good with that. Here’s my complaint. I turn my PC on here at work this morning and right away, I’m told a new update is ready for download. I chose the option of waiting since I had some stuff to do. I figured I would look at it later and take care of it. Next thing I know, I’m being prompted to ‘Restart Now’ or ‘Restart Later’. That’s when I realized that it must be the WMF update, so we are way late on rolling the patch out, in my opinion. But like I said, that is not my world or responsibility here at work.
My issue is every few minutes I get the popup window prompting me to restart and I don’t want to restart. It will disrupt everything I am doing. I will restart later, but not now. The default for ‘Restart Now’ is N and the default for Restart Later is L, and that is basically backwards from what we are used to. N is generally used to say No, I’ll do it later, but in this case, if I press N when it pops up, I’m shutting down.
C’mon Microsoft, be consistent, I’m living with the annoying popup window today, till later, but let N be NO and anything else be Yes. How about using buttons that say Yes and No to answer the question ‘Do you want to restart your computer now?’?
That’s all, I’m done, carry on with your lives, I’ve got to go reboot!
