Free To Worship

Mark Batterson says:

I’m so grateful for a church where I can be myself.

He goes on to say:

There is so much pretense in so many churches. There is an image to uphold. It’s like a game of charades that never ends! I love the Church, but there is way too much posturing and positioning. Too many churches mistake cultural conformity for spiritual maturity. There is a sense of safety and security because everyone is like everyone else.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I have really felt drawn to worship lately, not just sing songs but truly worship. It needs to get beyond the posturing and the image that we all feel like we have to maintain and allow ourselves to open up and worship God. It’s personal, it’s not a production, regardless of if you are in a church building on Sunday morning or if you are in your bedroom or in your car. It shouldn’t matter where you are, worship is based on your heart and where your focus is.

We visited our ‘so-called’ backup church last Sunday and spent the day with some friends and Mary and I both agreed that we felt more free to worship that morning than we had in a long time. It’s refreshing and something that I am working toward getting back to.

Read his post to get the full impact of what he is saying. It’s good stuff.

Jim, I really resonate with this post… I have, for YEARS, yearned for and longed for something substantial in our worship of God. I am a music and worship leader – have been for years – mega-years! And while there are a fair number of those on my various ensembles who actually “get it” regarding what I would call “authentic worship” there are tons who do not. They simply view their role as “choir member” or “drummer” or whatever… they seek the “show” or the “spectacle” rather than the “refreshing freedom” that only comes with PURE worship.

God has called me, as a matter of fact, to be a voice “out there” to help steer us all back to a more authentic worship… though sometimes I feel like a lone voice! That’s why it was great to read this post of yours – now there are TWO! ha ha ha…

    Blessings!
