Firefox History

Posted on February 7, 2006

I know not everyone cares for Firefox, and I know not everyone has even heard of Firefox, but many of us have watched it evolve over the years into a stable reliable browser.  It’s not as perfect as some have said it is, it’s not as secure as some have proclaimed and it may not run ActiveX like it should and it may or may not be better than any other browser, but it is a solid browser and one that I prefer and recommend.

So, why am I saying this?  Well, thanks to PC Doctor, here is a link to Ben Goodger’s perspective on where Firefox came from.  It’s lengthy, but it is a good read.  Firefox has had several name changes over the years and I have rode through all of them and watched this project mature into what it is today.  Like I said, it’s not perfect, it’s not the end all to the browser wars but it is a worthy contender.  The story is interesting also, there is more to it than what Ben shares, but as he says in his intro:

The story of Mozilla is long and rich in detail. There are many perspectives. This is mine.

Clearly, the browser wars will be heating up again, they probably have already begun with IE7 beta out.  I remember the days when IE and Netscape were neck and neck, I would regularly go from one to the other as they released new features, outdoing each other.

We’ve come a long way since then, but I wouldn’t mind getting back to ‘the good ‘ol days’ of browser wars, we all benefit from a little competition.

Anyone remember all of Firefox’s previous names?

Wasn’t Phoenix and/or Firebird a previous name for FireFox? I think I first checked it out when it was still FireFox .92, or something like that. Before that, I was just using Mozilla.

I have checked out IE7 (beta 2) already, and it’s definitely an improvement over FF, but it still doesn’t hold a candle to it. Some of its rendering capabilities are definitely better than IE6, and the tabs are a nice touch. I’m sticking with FF though.

[...] Rick pointed out in a comment on my last post that he was thinking Firefox used to be Phoenix and/or Firebird.  Of course!  I could recall Firebird but Phoenix escaped me.  If you care, here’s a link to a Flexbeta post with the version history, which is very cool, especially if you are up too late and too tired to care about anything else.  So, check it out.
