What If…

I am reading Naked Conversations by Robert Scoble and Shel Israel and it is a fascinating book.  I have a long way to go to get through it but even at this point, it raises some questions in my mind.

Microsoft has used blogging as a way to add a human face to the company and it is a form of letting customers interact directly with people in the company.  There is an obvious concern of something being said by someone in their blog that will be detrimental to the company, but it’s really no different than any regular conversation that an employee might have with a client.  The point being that we need to erase the concern that blogging is a risk or a liability to companies, it’s probably just the opposite.
I know some churches already embrace the idea of blogging and I also know that most churches do not, but let’s think about this.  What if churches allowed and even encouraged it’s employees to blog?  What if churches encouraged it’s ministry leaders to blog?  Clearly, it’s great when the pastor blogs because that gives the world a view into the pastor’s world, beyond Sunday morning.
But wouldn’t it be kinda cool if many people across many levels of the church blogged, in their own way, some might be more transparent than others, but overall it gives church members and the rest of the world, a view into the church like nothing else could.

We need to drop this fear of blogging and embrace it as a ministry tool.  Keep it in perspective, I’m not saying it’s the ultimate outreach tool or the only one you need, but I am saying it’s a valuable resource that we need to embrace.  We need to encourage it’s use, train our people, teach them the concepts, equip them to use it effectively and allow God to open up the church in this new way and allow everyone to see into your church in new ways.

What do you think?  Any thoughts?

  1. I wholeheartedly agree with you. I love it that many of NCC’s staffers are bloggers. I think it drastically improves the communication from the leadership of the church (both internal and external.)
