The Perfect Time

Laquita’s Corner

It’s past time for another blog. Jim hasn’t had to bug me lately, but I’m sure he is about to. Maybe I can surprise him this time. We’ll see…

Last time, I ended by expressing how frustrated I was with my sister not being ready to talk to my father. As usual, I was trying to rush God. He is never rushed because He is never late (unlike me every single morning). The amazing thing about the Lord is that He knows all before we do and knows how to handle it before we even know it’s a problem. I’m a planner. I plan my life well in advance. That may seem like a good thing. However, when I was in college. I had a plan for how I was going to get married, begin my career and have children. My mother told me one day that God was in Heaven laughing at my plans because His were so much better. Back to the story…

My sister kept putting me off about when she wanted to approach my father. I finally told her to let me know when she was ready and waited. During that time, we saw the church we wanted to attend go through an upheaval involving the Children’s Pastor. The Children’s Pastor left the church under circumstances too complicated and personal to discuss here. When they left the church, they made sure everyone on their team knew to not follow them. They spent a couple of months going to a church a couple of hours away. The Lord told them to start a church. It took awhile for them to obey His Will.

Meanwhile, our family was still trying to figure out what we were going to do. We were grateful that we hadn’t stopped the home services yet. I was admitting that Joanna was following the timing of God. Brian and I knew that as soon as John and Dawn started a church, we would be there. As things unfolded, they were going to start out with a get together after the city Christmas parade. After that, we would be meeting on Sunday evenings. The invitation happened to show up on Thanksgiving. It had been delivered to the neighbors by mistake. Their granddaughter came over with it just as we were sitting down to dinner. It was an awkward moment since my father was sitting next to me.

The Sunday after the parade, Joanna and I decided it was time to talk to Daddy. Our husbands would be there, but Joanna and I would do the talking. Actually, being the younger sister, I pushed Joanna forward.

Joanna said something to the effect that we all felt that we needed a congregation. We appreciated his teaching and learned from him, but we needed a “real church”. Daddy amazed us by saying, “I’ve been thinking that, too. I just didn’t know how to say it or where we would go.” Joanna explained how her husband and she had thought of a church near Daddy’s house. I explained what our family was going to do. We were amazed at how the Lord worked it all out! We all decided that it would be best if we kept up the current situation until after Christmas.

We went to John and Dawn’s house that evening for the second meeting with our new church. Our church started a new year meeting in a dance studio on Sundays and the pastor’s house for Wednesdays. Daddy was actually there for the first Sunday. In fact, he attended for about a month or more. The main reason he isn’t still attending is the fact that it is a long drive. He now attends a church near to him. My sister and her husband drive to attend with him. She isn’t completely happy that they aren’t as involved. It’s difficult to be a part of a church when you live 45 minutes away. But, they love their church on Sundays.

Of course, we are highly involved in our church. Brian leads worship. I’m teaching Sunday School and heading up the preschool. The girls are involved in the Children’s ministry. We have moved from the dance studio to a rental property. The church jumped in with both feet and painted every room in the building. We also knocked down a wall or two. It continues to be a work in progress. The more we work on the building, the more we see that needs work. The building has major flaws that are bigger than anyone can do to fix. Right now, we are praying about moving to something of our own. God knows what is in the future. Once again, we are trusting His timing. Because it is always perfect.
