Benefits Of Blogging

Posted on April 19, 2006

The Boston Globe has this article titled ‘Blogs essential to a good career’ and it has a lot of good information in it. It kicks off in this way:

Blogging is good for your career. A well-executed blog sets you apart as an expert in your field.

It goes on to list 8 points:

  1. Blogging creates a network.
  2. Blogging can get you a job.
  3. Blogging is great training.
  4. Blogging helps you move up quickly.
  5. Blogging makes self-employment easier.
  6. Blogging provides more opportunities.
  7. Blogging could be your big break.
  8. Blogging makes the world a better place.

Read the article for more detail.

This is all a great followup to my last post and ties in real well. Mike McBride says:

Of course, as others have said, blogging means putting yourself out there for others to find. In order for it to help, and not hurt, you need to resist the urge to behave in a way that would cast you in a poor light.

That is a great point, there are two sides to the coin, a great deal of exposure, which can be good and a great deal of exposure, which can be bad! It’s like when you are arrested (I have heard) ‘…anything you say can be used against you.’ and this is true of blogging. More than likely, anything you say will be used against you, good or bad.

The Boston Globe goes on to say:

”The most interesting blogs are focused and have a certain attitude,” says van Allen. ”You need to have a guiding philosophy that you stick to. You cannot one minute pontificate on large issues of the world and the next minute be like, ‘My dog died.’ “

So be aware what you say on your blog, I’ll second what Mike says:

You should act accordingly, you never know who’s going to see what you’ve said.

So, write quality content and let your content speak for who you are.
