Who Are You?
Posted on May 15, 2006
I started this blog in October, 2004 and I started it because I wanted a way to share ideas and learn from other like minded people. I also began it anonymously. I didn’t consider the way I would interact with people and the way I would get to know people, as well.
I don’t know why I thought anonymous was good, I guess I just thought people would not care who was actually writing. Over time, I gradually gave up more information about who I was and today, on my About me page, I give up pretty much everything about me, including a contact form to e-mail and even my cell phone number.
Ok, so what? Here’s my point. If you have a blog or if you are considering starting a blog, the fact is, people want to know who’s behind it. At least your name and maybe even your church, if it’s church related. That’s the first thing I look for when I come across a new blog, who is this and what’s their story? It adds credibility and depth. That is also what I have told anyone I have talked with that wants to start a blog, because the fact is, people want to know who you are.
There’s no formula to this, we are all different, you can’t necessarily just take what I have on my About me page and use the same exact approach on your blog…..well, you could, I don’t care, but my point is, it may not be appropriate since you have a different take on things and are a different person. So, feel free to use mine as a starting place and make it your own.
By the way, I never would have thought to put my phone number on there, except for the fact that I actually get e-mails from people wanting to talk to me. So, I decided to make it as easy as possible to contact me any way you want to. A phone number is not essential, but it’s something to consider.
On a final note, I never actually put my church on here, but, over time, it did come out, through conversations and in other ways. I just never felt like I was doing this blog specifically for my own church and since I was a volunteer, I was not officially representing that specific church. Maybe I should have, but if you have read this blog awhile, you know that I have since left that church and I’m slowly starting to get involved at my new church, Calvary Chapel, Joplin, but maybe in ways more than just technology. Stay tuned for more on that.  Now, if you are on the edge of your seat and have always wondered about my last church, my next post is going to highlight a new blog of a great guy at my old church who is doing some big things, so check back!

Amazingly enough, it does seem to matter who we are. The greatest number of hits my site receives is on the “Who’s writing this stuff?” page.
I am so glad that you are out here in the blogosphere. There is a great need for dialog on what we do. Sadly, there isn’t much. Keep it up, I will keep linking to you.
[...] Jim Walton at Church Tech Matters wrote a post about his new About Me page, so I thought I’d do the same. I’ve posted my About Me page, and I’ve also provided a new contact form if you want to reach me. Permalink [...]
Jim,
Thanks to your post, I did the same thing on my blog as well. Keep up the great work!
