On My Wish List

I have many things on my wish list, but let me describe what one of those things is. I like Bloglines for what it is, it is reliable, it’s online so I can access it anywhere and it generally always works. I tend to like to organize things and in Bloglines, I group certain things together into folders. That’s nice, but I’m not satisfied with it. I want to take my daily feed reading experience up a notch, bigtime, but I’m not aware that what I want is out there.

So, I’m appealing to all of you smart people that read my blog to either show me an existing solution or create something according to my fickle desires.

I have spoken in the past of my fascination with tagging, which is a web2.0 deal and I know not everyone gets it. I tag all of my posts, which enables my posts to be grouped together with other posts with the same tags across the internet. Pretty cool, eh?

Now, apply that concept to blogs, not blogs on the public level, but blogs in my feedreader. I want to be able to group blogs together based on how I think they should be grouped and some blogs belong in more than one group. For instance, I currently have a folder in Bloglines titled ChurchTech and there is a bunch of church tech blogs that I read, however, there are some that could also be grouped together as multimedia, for example. A blog may fall under the category of church, but it also might fall under leadership. So, I want the ability to tag each blog with multiple tags and it needs to be dynamic and quick. I don’t want several steps to adjust a tag. What this does for me is allow me to browse thru the current posts on leadership or then look at churchtech, then look at web2.0, etc.

Like I said, Bloglines has been good but I think it’s time to bump it up a notch. Bloglines, is there any updates on the horizon that would satisfy me with this type of functionality included? I don’t want to leave you, but I need more. It’s too hard for me to even decide to move a feed from one folder to another. For instance, I might add a feed, just on a trial basis and from there it might move to a specific folder or it might go away. Honestly, I’m realizing that I’m not willing to take the effort to move it, and now I have many blogs uncategorized because of that. Lazy on my part? Yes, but that’s not wrong, I’m always looking for ways to improve everything I touch and what I’m suggesting would be a definite improvement.

I have heard that there is a way to use del.icio.us as a feed reader but I have not exactly figured that concept out yet. (I haven’t done much to research it either, but if that’s true, then that may be the way to go since tagging is already built-in)

Bloglines strength is that it is online, which I prefer, since I use multiple computers and I will stay true to Bloglines until something better gets my attention.

So, is there an online feedreader that uses tagging in this way or some other kind of grouping?

Bloglines, will you step up to the plate? I know your interface has changed recently and it’s a little more web2.0′ish. Is this the kind of things that are being tested at your beta site? Can I play? (translation: Can I have an invite to beta test?)

Can del.icio.us or anything else satisfy my desire?

Am I the only one wanting this kind of thing? I doubt it, however, many people don’t realize what they don’t have until they get it.

  1. Hey, Jim. I recently chatted with someone who is building just such a tool. I think they will start to release at the end of the summer, if you can hang on. I’ll get the details as things become more public.

  2. Jim Walton says:

That would be awesome, James! Please let me know.

  3. Simon says:

Maybe look at FeedLounge, it allows for tagging. It isn’t free like Bloglines though, although considering an increased reliance on feed readers, paying for web-based apps that do what you want may be more common.

  4. Jim says:

Have you looked at Bradsoft’s FeedDemon 2.0? you can find the details at newsgator.com

  5. The guys who run blogs4god.com and e-church.com have
been talking about something like this as well. You
might want ot check out their sites.

BTW, when I try to post a comment, this comment box
goes way off the screen and doesn’t word wrap.

  6. Tim says:

Have you tried Feedblitz? It’s an RSS/ATOM/XML to email service. I find scrolling to be easier by far than any kind of reader available. Readers require too much clicking. One daily email with all my feeds is just right.
