Highlights Of The Past Week

Posted on June 29, 2006 by Jim Walton

I have had 4 things worth mentioning that have happened in the past week.

  1. I drank bleach – 2 bad habits collided one night last week, at bedtime I take a couple of pills and generally, there is a glass of water on the kitchen counter and I take a drink from it instead of fixing my own glass.(that’s the first bad habit)  My daughter’s are famous for letting dishes soak, instead of washing them, a good excuse for not washing.(bad habit 2)  The lights were off in the kitchen and I grabbed a glass by the sink and took a swig.  It tasted like ginger ale, but it had a tingling after taste, then burning, down my throat.  It was dish soap with bleach, and some water.  The cool thing I learned is that you won’t die by drinking dish soap, but I sure don’t want to do it again.  Although, now that I have done that, I feel like I can take on the world!
  2. I was stung by a wasp on Saturday – My body doesn’t take well to wasp stings.  I was pulling the hose out of the hose reel and apparently I disturbed him so he stung my hand.  Saturday was ok, Sunday, my hand looked fine, until the night, it started swelling up.  Monday morning about 4am, I woke up itching my hand and it was at least twice it’s normal size.  After making it to my 7am Monday morning meeting, I left to go to the doctor, who said take Benadryl and Motrin and keep it on ice.  I wish I would have known that’s all I had to do.  By Tuesday, the swelling was down but my hand was stll stiff, today my hand is back to normal.
  3. My geeky wife bought me an iPod for my birthday.  I know many of you have lived the iPod life and moved on to bigger and better things.  Maybe I will do that, eventually, but for now, I think my iPod is pretty cool.  Still finding more good podcasts.  Tell me of any that you know of.
  4. My geeky wife also got me a new phone.  My strategy for doing anything cell phone related is to call the cancel number.  They immediately want to do anything to make you happy.  I called one day, a couple of weeks ago, probably because I was bored.  We have started becoming restless since our contract ends in a few months and we want to be new customers again.  Well, Sprint surprised me and said Mary could have a new phone for free.  So, I took the bait.  I couldn’t have a new phone because I haven’t kept the same phone for 2 years like Mary has and even though I bought my second phone on eBay, Sprint still held that against me.  That was ok, I guess.  I was told to call back for a tracking number in a couple of days, but when I called back, the nice person kept asking me if I wanted to sign a 2 year contract, I said no, I had already done all that in the last call, I just needed my tracking number for my new phone.  Apparently, in some foreign countries, that statement translates to ‘Cancel my order’ because that is what happened, but we didn’t know until calling back again later.  Whatever!  We just figured we would change to the other merged, mega sized cell phone company and get fancy new phones there.  Sprint called Mary on Tuesday, I guess maybe they were bored.  As they chatted, the person told her they would send her a new phone, she said ok, but why won’t you give my husband a new phone?  Apparently, that statement translates to ‘why won’t you give my husband a new phone?’ and their response is ‘We can do that now.’  Last week, I was not a preferred customer but this week I am.  The catch now is the phones were on backorder, so it might be 2 weeks or more before we get them.  Bummer.  That was Tuesday afternoon, yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, we had 2 boxes from Sprint on our front porch.  So we each have our new phones, it is the Samsung Blade, by the way.  Imagine the Razr, with some extras, it’s very nice.

So, that’s my last week or so, like anyone cares, but I’ve had some big things happen.
