Wired Churches Workshop Recap

I am really slow following up on this. This last Tuesday, non-blog Brad and I and 6 others from his church took a road trip to Kansas City to attend the Wired Churches Regional Workshop, held at Westside Family Church, which seemed ideal to house this kind of event. There were 3 workshops to choose from, Communications by Kem Meyer, Simply Strategic Volunteers by Tim Stevens and Tony Morgan and First Impressions by Mark Waltz. Out of our group, we covered all of them, but Brad and I went to Communications and that was very informative.

Kem has more than 15 years of experience in corporate communication and her insight is practical and insightful. Instead of recapping all of my notes on here I thought I would just highlight a couple of things that stuck out with me. One thing she said is:

  • As the church, it’s not our job to add to the noise
  • Wrap your message around a worldview
  • Use bullets instead of paragraphs
  • Find the connection point
  • Bad marketing is when you try to change someone’s world view
  • Prioritize based on values, not on fairness
  • AAAB – that stands for ‘acronyms are a barrier’ (by the way, I made up that acronym :) )

Finally, she shared the following statistics:

We remember:

    • 10% of what we read
    • 20% of what we hear
    • 30% of what we see
    • 40% of what we do
    • 100% of what we feel

The point is, we need to send a message that touches people’s feelings, whether our message is on a website or any other medium.

There’s a lot more information that she shared, I would highly recommend attending her workshop. Keep your eye on Brad’s blog too, I know he’s planning to post some other highlights, as well.

Thank you, Kem for sharing your valuable insight and experience!
