Anniversary X2

Posted on October 23, 2006

This is a new beginning for me, in a way, but in a way, it’s not. It’s really just me continuing down this path that the Lord is leading me down. The new part probably has more to do with me actually following the Lord and trusting Him as I seek to do His will.

Today is the 2 year anniversary of this blog and the above paragraph is the first few sentences of my first post on October 23, 2004. When I started this thing, I had no expectations and no goals, it was simply me wanting to learn more about how to do technology in the church better.

I wasn’t aware of any blogs specific to technology in the church, if there were any, they were not on my radar. I started with Romans 12:2 as the basis for this blog and it really still is the case. It’s still in my sidebar today, I like The Message version of it:

Take your everyday, ordinary life–your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life–and place it before God as an offering.

That’s a good reminder about why I’m doing this. The first post referenced above is dated April 5, 2005 but if you look near the bottom, the original date shows. I started this blog at blogger.com, then in April moved to my own domain. Also, I captured the first few posts and reposted them. I actually had them all reposted here at one point, but I have somehow lost the first 6 months or so.

Here’s my thoughts on the past 2 years:

  • I had no clue what I was getting into
  • I started blogging so I could learn more
  • There are a lot of people out there much smarter than I am
  • I have never thought of myself as a writer
  • There are currently 411 posts
  • There are currently 566 comments
  • I like comments
  • I keep looking for my big break, but I haven’t gotten it yet
  • Over the past 2 years and more, I can see God leading me to places way beyond my wildest dreams
  • I have met more people than I can count, on many levels, through comments, emails, instant messaging, phone calls and in person
  • This blog is viewed thousands of times a month by people from every continent except Antarctica
  • Apparently those Antarctic dwellers are overly sensitive and I offended them
  • This blog has a better reputation than I do
  • My reputation is now known worldwide, David Russell has been known to say:

Jim’s a great guy who loves to break stuff and then fix it. I love that kind of approach to life. If someone hasn’t coined this phrase yet, they should: If it ain’t broke, break it and make it better.

  • David generously helped me fix my feed once after I allegedly broke it
  • There’s another David Russell who works at my bank and goes to my church
  • I wonder who the real David Russell is
  • He has been at my bank and at my church long before I was ever at either place
  • When I think of this blog, it intimidates me
  • I’m not a writer
  • The idea that people keep coming back blows me away
  • My parents now read my blog
  • They are becoming geeky
  • Did I mention that I like it when people comment
  • This blog and everything associated with it is totally out of my hands and in God’s hands
  • This blog has not lasted for 2 years because of anything I have done
  • I quit it once
  • I came back after a week, I couldn’t stand it
  • Maybe I secretly am a writer
  • I wrote this entire post once, saving it regularly and it disappeared, this version is better
  • This should post at the same time as my first post….clever, eh?

I’m just hanging on, having a blast, enjoying the ride.

Happy Anniversary, CTM! You’ve aged well, I’m ready to see what’s next.

Has it really been two years? I heard you had a contributer. Whatever happened to her? Maybe she’ll write again soon. It’s funny, you went into this thinking you weren’t a writer. You really are a very good writer. I’m proud of you for taking off with this. It’s amazing what all it’s brought into your life!

    Keep up the good work!

Congrats Jim. 2 years and a successful blog is a great thing. I am very happy to run into you, and I didn’t forget our conversation as I am still working on items on my end. As the others said, keep blessing the Lord with your work, its most definitely giving Him glory.

Late on this. Par for the course for me. :) But Happy Anniversary, Jim. I wonder who the real David Russell is as well. :)
