Some of you may remember, I used to be the sole, volunteer tech guy at my church, supporting nearly 50 desktops and a couple of servers. I would spend 10-20 hours a week at church, in addition to my 40-50 hours at my day job. It’s actually been a year since I stepped down from that role, and the events that continued, led my family and I to ultimately change churches. God does move in mysterious ways and in ways that I do not always understand. But He has blessed us a great deal in the past year, through everything. One thing is that we seem to have more friends lately and closer friends, as well. We still have friends at our old church, and we are still technically part of our small group that we started, although, we haven’t been going consistently this fall. I still hang out with the children’s pastor too, we do breakfast nearly every week, when I’m in town.
This past week, I had the opportunity to return to my old stomping grounds, my friend, the children’s pastor, needed some technical assistance. So, I met him out there kinda late one evening and it was fun to go back but it was strange, also. It was just like it used to be, I’ve spent many late nights there, but I felt like a stranger in a foreign land, an outsider. It was familiar but it wasn’t comfortable, like in the past. Everything looked just like it did a year ago, but I know so much has happened in that amount of time, both in my life and in the life of that church.
We sat in the sound booth in the children’s worship area, where I’ve sat so many times previously, and I showed him some things about Audacity. We trimmed the beginning and ending off of a couple of songs and saved them in the right format for iTunes.
Then we opened iTunes and listened to our masterpieces, we’re a pretty good team, for sure. That was all good, but iTunes looked different to me, I inquired about it and he confirmed my suspisions. It was just downloaded last week, v.7. I had just recently read some things about the new version of iTunes and it wasn’t good, it’s apparently slow and a processor hog. So, I asked how it was working out for them and he confirmed, it’s slow and it locks up sometimes.
Everything I have seen and heard about the new iTunes is consistent and if I wasn’t so tired, I would track down what I read and provide the source. But, if you want my opinion, I would hang on to whatever version of iTunes you have for a while longer, I’m still running v.6 and as happy as can be with it.
It was fun to go back, I guess, but my priorities are different these days. It’s more fun to anticipate what’s next, and what’s next, at this point, is way more than where I saw myself going a year ago. Oh yeah, I did get a quick look at ACS, which I helped pave the way for. They are just now settling in with it and it’s been a long road to get to here but it’s a good fit for them and I’m happy that’s working out well.
Isn’t it funny how people can have such drastically different experiences? I’m a music junkie and I actually swear by iTunes 7. I have no doubt it’s more processor intensive than the previous versions, but it also does a lot more. I love it because it automatically pulls in album art, and it’s got a 3D jukebox-like option for scrolling through your albums in your library. I keep it open 24/7 on both my work and home computers and I don’t think I’ve ever had it hang up. Anyway, I’m no iTunes zealot, but I thought I’d let you know my experience.
I know how you feel about the whole going back to the old ‘stomping’ grounds…i made the mistake of giving to much time to my church and was close to burning out. Now aside from going to service I have a hard time hanging out there anymore…
P.S. I like the site..
