What’s In It For Me, Eh?
Posted on October 31, 2006
It seems like there is etiquette in everything we do – golf, driving, cell phone and many more. There’s also blogging etiquette and clearly, it’s something that can make you or break you as a blogger. The main thing to keep in mind is to treat others like you would like to be treated, that’s a good place to start, at least.
Pamela Slim of Escape from Cubicle Nation offers a list of what not to do. The beauty of her list is instead of just criticizing bad approaches, she offers a better approach. Here are the high points of what not to do:
- The “I want something” email
- The “I’ll give you yours if you give me mine” link building strategy
- The “Please blog about my company” email
- The “Please blog about the company that pays me to do their PR” email
- The “Nice to meet you here’s my card and my 30 minute drone about myself” technique at live functions
Go to Pamela’s blog to see her solutions. These points simply reinforce the value of putting relationship first. You know, maybe it’s not all about me…..it should be, but apparently it’s not.
Get to know people, put yourself out there first before you beg for something to be given to you, eh?
What’s with all the eh, eh? Well, I happen to be in Ontario this week for work, so I’m being exposed to a new culture in Canada, it’s great being here, actually, the people are very friendly. I was able to see the Toronto Maple Leafs play last night, that’s not something most of us get to do every day. (That’s hockey, by the way.) It was great to sit in a restaurant and watch the game that was taking place not all that far away!
So, reach out to fellow bloggers, especially the ones you like and don’t pressure them to do something for you. Do something for them first, you never know where that could lead.

Jim, what a great resource list! I was just reading over Pamela’s solutions, which I would suggest any blogger to look over. It is all about relationships in blogging. I do have to admit, I am still relitively new to the whole blogging world but I have found that some really good relationships can be built by putting up a little effort. I really like the overall point that Pamela seems to make of “Its not about getting something”. That reminds me of something like the needy friend, who only comes to you when they want. Excellent post!
And after reading that I feel so bad for not keeping in contact with you as I have intended. Please forgive me bro as I really have let all types of aspects of life get to me.
As for what MMM can do for CTM – I have dreams and so do you.
