Projection Blues Is Hot

Posted on November 11, 2006

Wow! This post is one of my hottest topics ever, in the sense that it probably generated more comments than any other post.

There is a wealth of information in those comments, thank you all for sharing your observations and experiences. I have taken all of that and created a page here, using Helipad, a cool Ajax, note taking site. I really wish it was more wiki in nature, so we can have a place for all of us to share and build. I may pursue something like that, but this is ok for now. It allowed me to sort thru all of the comments and get them organized. By the way, there is a 5th obvious rule that I forgot:

5. You must use CCLI - This is the way you license your church to display the words to the songs. Average cost - $99/year. Don’t break the law in this area! Wikipedia has a page explaining it, as well.

Wikipedia also has a great page titled Worship presentation program, that expains this concept of projecting the words on the screen, plus has links to some of the more well-known software. It lists some different ones than what were brought out in the comments here, but between the 2 lists, you should have a pretty thorough view of what’s available.

I know I have gotten an education and I was just ranting about a big pet peeve of mine.

I think its worth noting as well that there are other copyright collection organizations out there, although I have had great success with CCLI. Also, you dont HAVE to use CCLI or one of its kind. You can manually ask permission and pay royalties for each piece of music that you use… but c’mon. Join CCLI and they take care of all of that for you. It’s not a license to do anything, but it does cover most of the church’s needs for publishing. In any case, like the man said, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE CARE OF COPYRIGHTS! Its very important, and could get your church in big big trouble if you don’t do it.
