Momentum Conference, 2007
Posted on November 28, 2006
If you happened to peruse my sidebar, due to my suggestion in my last post, you might have noticed the icon on the left. That is the Momentum Blog. What is that? I’m glad you asked.
According to the official site:
Momentum is a conference for churches that don’t have a permanent home, but desire to “Do church” with excellence no matter where they meet.
Also, at Momentum you will learn to:
- Transform any space into a dynamic environment
- Effectively mobilize volunteers
- Create a safe and fun atmosphere for kids
- Make a homeless church feel like home
- Network with church leaders
Basically, it’s a conference to equip people to do portable church better and improve how you do things or educate you on what it takes to successfully build a portable church. It’s hosted by Calvary Fellowship in Miami Lakes, FL. and will actually be held at the theatre they meet in each week.
Bob Franquiz is the Lead Pastor there and he is a great teacher and all around great guy. I love listening to his podcasts, even though he mocked me once, in a sermon. (It had to do with a strange dream I had where I needed his socks, seriously, I needed them. It was a dream, what can I say, they were new socks, still in the package, by the way and Bob was asleep in his office, so he didn’t need them, at the moment.) You know a preacher is good when he can make use of a crazy dream that is totally illogical, in his sermon, to mock somebody he has never met. ![]()
Ok, back to reality, focus on the task at hand.
There are many churches that meet in schools, theatres, community centers and other types of building and it’s a setting where each week, everything has to be set up and taken down and it all has to be portable: screens, projectors, sound and multimedia equipment, amps, speakers, monitors, instruments, all supplies for classrooms has to be portable, cribs, toys, changing tables and even signage needs to be unpacked and packed each week.
I have a real heart for the portable church, I was actively involved with one a few years ago before moving out of state. Now, there is a fairly new church meeting in a grade school not far from my house and I’m planning on checking them out in the next 4-6 weeks, to see what’s going on there. There is something special about a church that is not concerned with a building and more concerned about reaching people for Christ.
The Momentum conference is your chance to network with like minded church leaders and learn how to make your portable church the best that it can be. Go to their site to get all the details and also, check out the Momentum Blog, where it is updated regularly with conference details. One thing that the blog focuses on is interviewing leaders of portable churches and gives insight into how others are doing portable church.
The best part of this conference: March 1-2, 2007 in Miami. That’s almost enough of a reason to go, a few days in Miami at the end of a long, hard winter.
I would love to be there, partly for the weather, but more importantly, for the wealth of knowledge and experiences being shared, but at this point, I don’t have the budget to get me there and cover the conference. Maybe another time for me, but what about you?
Make plans now and reserve your spot to be at this conference. This is the first of it’s kind, as far as I know.

With how tech and time is today, the option for church anywhere should be more the norm than the exception. Sure we might choose the day, but making it so that we can worship, commune and learn nearly anywhere would be a great asset to everyone.
