Bible Software Review[3] - websites

Posted on February 5, 2007

I realize that a website is not software, but I already started the series with that title. This is my final installment of free Bible software/sites and next, I might have a bonus post on this same type of thing that would really be taking it to the next level, we’ll see how things go.

There are several websites I have used, some for many years and some are new in the last year.

Crosswalk.com

Crosswalk - been around for awhile with many, many versions of the Bible, including NIV, KJV w/ Strong’s numbers, NAS w/ Strong’s numbers, NKJV, NLT and The Message. Also, commentaries, encyclopedias, concordances, lexicons, sermon helps, parallel Bible and a reading plan to read the Bible in a year.

You can’t go wrong with Crosswalk.

Blueletter Bible - Similar to Crosswalk, it’s been around for years and evolved, many of the same tools and also audio/video and images and maps. This site is a little more difficult to navigate, but one thing I like is that it’s the best site on my phone. My phone is nothing fancy but I’ve got internet on it and only certain sites work on it. This one does!

Bible Gateway - Again, it’s been around for years and this site has a similar list of versions as Crosswalk, including NIV. Plus, there are versions in different languages, as well as audio, and commentaries, eBooks, dictionaries, topical index, key word search and reading plans.

Net Bible - This is my favorite Bible site. I have had a NET Bible (New English Translation) for about 4 years now and I did just order the Reader’s Edition, which removed a good portion of the 67,000 or so notes to make it a much smaller Bible to carry. I still like my first beta edition NET Bible but the Reader’s Edition is more practical. (This has nothing to do with the website, except for the fact that you can order this Bible from their website.

This site is chock full of tools and other resources, including pastoral helps, sermon illustrations, discussion forums, dictionaries and much more. Seriously, much more. On a regular basis, I head to Net Bible to look something up or study. You can also download the NET Bible to your computer.

e-Bible - This is a cool site, simply for it’s web 2.0 look and feel. This is the newest entry into the online Bible world and it is definitely worth your time. There are a ton of tools at this site, plus resources for your website including a search box, verse of the day and a browser toolbar. The cool thing about this site is that you can tag passages of scripture and then others can search for any tags and find verses that you have tagged similarly. It just encourages this whole web 2.0 community. It looks like the tags are now called bookmarks, which is probably more universally understood.

So there you have it. I would encourage you to get familiar with these sites and you may find one that you want to settle on. For me, I use different ones for different things. eBible and BibleGateway have a blog you can subscribe to and the way it looks, eBible is in the process of making some big improvements and additions.

I really like eBible because of the tagging features. Makes it easy to gather notes when you’re putting together a sermon or research for a report.

Its good to see so much effort for Bible being done. This could be the best way to keep it alive always. However I hope they are taking care that they dont differ in content and change the bible to something new

I found this site through e-Sword. I was looking for more downloadable bible websites.
I’m really new to computing, and still trying to find what works and what don’t.
I’m working on an home church with internet support. I’m not sure how I get it done, but I’m on the right track.

I would like to pick your brain about ChurchTech.

Thanks to the links for Bible downloads.

I’ve got e-Sword’s KJV+ and ISR+ (The Scriptures) and I found the Ferrar Fenton Bible online.

Much Success to your web site.

    Ruben
