Virtual Hosts

Posted on February 9, 2007 by Jim Walton

This is really cool information, if you’re a web developer kind of person.  David Russell just posted about virtual hosts and it’s the kind of thing that once you understand it, it makes total sense.

Read his detailed post and even click through to his source of this information, godbit.  He describes adding a line in your HOSTS file, then also modifying Apache’s conf file, which will direct specific local requests to a folder on your own PC.

This actually allows you to create a new root level domain that acts as a virtual development/test environment and eliminate some issues with using a subfolder on your web server.

Since I don’t need to rehash his detailed description, check his post out.  I’ll be helping Mary get her own development environment set up, unless she just gets it done herself!  :)

Credit where credit is due. Lots of smart people did this before I did. That’s why I love Godbit so much. :) I just wanted to hash it all out for myself on the blog.
