Vista on Virtual PC 2007

I downloaded Virtual PC 2007, a free MS download and I’m installing Vista Business on it right now! We’ll see how it does, I only allocated about 400mb to the virtual machine, which is too low, I know but it’s already in the middle of installing. Once the install finishes, I’ll up the memory to around 700mb

I need to play with it and find the balance, but I’m thinking that if I’m in Vista, I won’t be jumping back and forth all that much between XP and Vista, so I can let Vista have a majority of the memory. Then when I’m done it should release the memory back to XP.

That may be a little too idealistic. Can anyone confirm how much memory I need to leave for the host system to run and also once the virtual machine is closed, is that memory freed up right away?

I’ll learn soon enough, I’m sure but I appreciate any insight.

I have 1.5Meg on my Host PC and I run Vista Ultimate in 512Meg in the guest PC. I’ve uptime it to 768Meg, but not noticed much of a difference. For most of my Virtual PC’s, I try to make sure I have at the minimum 512-768Meg left after I allocate a guest OS. If I need to run multiple VPCs, I will lower those values somewhat.

    Hope that helps.

my XP machine has 2GB of RAM, and i have allocated 512MB for vista business on virtual PC 2007. performance seems pretty good, much better than the older virtual PC 2004.
