Nothing To Write About

Posted on April 11, 2007 by Jim Walton

Some days I wonder what to write. There are times, more often than not, when I can think of nothing to write about. I’ve said this before, I’m not a writer, really, I’m not. Yet I can look back at the archives of this blog and see 2 years of my writing, 490 posts, to be exact. That’s more than one post every other day!

I’ve got a lot of stuff in my head that I could write about, I even created a wiki page to keep up with ideas that I have that I can write about. (you can add your own ideas there too, for what you want me to write about. Go for it.) There are days, like this week, where I look at that list and nothing happens.

So, why am I writing about nothing, when I have nothing to say? Because that’s what people who are not writers do, we write about nothing.

I’ve only had one thing that struck me this week as being worthy of posting, but I decided it was best not to. (You might have seen it, it’s the Kodak video that Scoble linked to.) It’s classic! I thought it might offend some people but part of me thinks that you are thicker skinned than I give you credit for. The language in the video is no worse than what you get in a PG movie, or on TV for that matter. So, that’s what I would’ve linked to this week if I was really a writer.

My wife is a writer, she thinks like a writer, she’s a member of several writers groups, she specializes in designing websites for writers and in fact, she’s speaking this Friday at a writer’s conference that’s out of town! She claims I write more than she does. I think she’s right.

Here’s the difference between me and a real writer – My standards are low, I have no expectations and I’m not thinking about how I’m supposed to write, I just write.

Here’s an interesting blog I came across this morning, on writing. Why do I care? Why does that blog interest me? It puzzles me because I’m not a writer. As I write this, I couldn’t be more serious, I AM NOT A WRITER!! Am I??

Are you a writer? Are you a blogger? Can the two co-exist? I would like to know.

Ha! Loved your post. I often ask myself the same questions. I blog, therefore, I am.
