TechSnob taken to a whole new level
Posted on April 14, 2007
I set up TechSnob recently, as I mentioned last week or so and I also described my own techsnobbery strengths. (Some consider it a weakness, but whatever) It’s all good, some other tech snobs came out of the woodwork, as well, but there is one that takes it to a whole new level.
Brian Glass came out and let his true self shine through. I don’t know Brian but I have read his blog for quite awhile and we have emailed a time or two, so I know him through his blog and a few emails. He’s a self proclaimed linux guy, knows linux, breathes linux, sleeps linux, truly believes in linux. I have a lot of respect for that because I have tinkered with linux for awhile off and on but never quite mastered it. I used to use unix at work nearly all the time, so I used to know all the command line stuff, these days, I have a couple of books when I need them.
In my mind, being a tech snob had to do with my use of technology and what I would and would not settle for, but Brian essentially threw down the gauntlet with this one. He commented and said:
Yes, I’m afraid I am. I have this incurable thought always niggling in the back of my mind that people who use Windows are ignorant, and if they’re not ignorant then they’re even worse, dumb. I’ve never been able to get past that.
Touché! I’ve got respect for a guy that can fully commit to something like that.
I’m a windows guy out of convenience and I’m sure that’s true for most of the rest of the world. MS is such a dominant force (near monopolistic!) in the marketplace that it is much easier to just fall in line.
I do have a linux box next to my feet here, running ubuntu, but it’s not up at the moment. Soon, I hope to have it on my network then it will make more sense to try to run it.
I feel like I should hand over my self-proclaimed TechSnob title. Maybe there’s value in the TechSnob domain. hmmmmm (perhaps I should sell the domain to the true tech snob) It won’t be cheap though! (gotta make a profit somehow)
To help justify myself, all of my websites are on a linux server.
Way to put things in perspective, Brian!
