Day Of Planning – Local Church IT and Gymnastics

Posted on April 30, 2007 by Jim Walton

Today was a day of planning, on several fronts.

First of all, I had lunch with Bryson Medlock and we began planning what our local church IT group should look like.  This will ultimately be a local roundtable of sorts but we didn’t yet decide on a name or anything.  We are aiming for sometime in June to have our first official meeting or roundtable or whatever it will be.  Bryson and I have similar hearts for equipping the church with technology and are looking forward to seeing where this goes.  Fun times ahead!

Tonight, after work, there was some more planning to be done.  We are finding ourselves in a unique situation and it’s surprising, to say the least.  This has nothing to do with church and technology, it has to do with what’s in the best interest of my family. Both of my daughters compete in gymnastics at a local YMCA.  They used to compete with a Y that is about 5 minutes from home until that program shut down, now we drive about 35 minutes to the next town over and we have done this for about 2 years now.

The girls had a great coach and lately we have started discussing getting a program started up again with this coach.  We went to Sonic and sat out at the playground and talked with the coach about what it will take to get this program going again.  We all agreed that we have the same heart for getting this gym started and have informally formed a partnership and we are pursuing several avenues for getting a gym up and running.

This partnership is a good fit for our two families, as we each bring unique strengths to the table.  Our ultimate goal is for our kids to be a part of a quality gymnastics program, but at this point, our secondary goal is creating a viable business model and figure out how to make this thing fly.

A major hurdle at this point is financing and we have some ideas but nothing definite yet.  There are grants available to women in business and that is one thing we are exploring, not that I’m a woman, but my wife is and so is our partner, the coach.  Any other ideas?  Anyone have an extra pile of cash sitting around?  Anyone want to invest in a gym?  It potentially will have gymnastics, cheerleading, dance and twirling, plus maybe a small workout facility and even a coffee bar.  We’re still in the brainstorming phase and we’re not shooting ideas down yet.

I have become the business/management mind of this operation, so I’m getting to dust off my business degree and put it to work after many years.

At this point we have this Squidoo lens to begin promoting our cause.  Check it out and click around a little bit if you want.
