Church and Copyright

Posted on May 16, 2007 by Jim Walton

I’ve really sworn off of just promoting anything and everything that someone sends me, so know that if I’m promoting something, I see it as valid, relevant and/or worthwhile.

Greg Atkinson e-mailed me, along with others, over a week ago, requesting me to listen to CreativeSynergyPodcast’s latest podcast and also to mention it on here.  Greg Atkinson and Anthony Coppedge do a podcast somewhat regularly and Greg describes this one in this way:

We just finished our most informative and practical episode on copyright and the Church. We interviewed 3 Church copyright professionals. We learned a great deal during the interview and believe this will be a great resource and help to Church leaders. Also included is a better understanding of the Church Copyright Administration and how they can help churches.

If you are involved with church media in any way or if you are a leader at your church, this podcast needs to be required listening.  It is packed full of information directly relating to copyright, as it relates to the church, this includes songs that you sing, videos that are displayed and much more.  This is not fluff, this is the law and it’s critical that your church is within the law.

The podcast includes Susan Fontaine Godwin of the Church Copyright Administration and attorneys Jeff Hermes and Brock Shinen and some of the specifics that they discuss include “fair use“, “parody“, using TV show segments in worship and much more.  This is an hour well spent, for sure.

Don’t miss it!  Thanks for the heads up, Greg!

If you want to know about Fair Use, there’s a pretty good video out on YouTube called A Fair(y) Use Tale that is pretty good explanation on what you can and cannot do with copyrighted material. It’s explained all by using clips from Disney movies. spw

Church copyright compliance is very important for a number of reasons. I’ve got a free article available on guidelines and resources at http://www.mbsinc.com/component/option,com_docman/Itemid,105/task,doc_download/gid,28.
