Windows Home Server Finally Up and Running
Posted on May 17, 2007
It’s taken me awhile but I finally have my Windows Home Server configured. It sure hasn’t been a priority for me. It’s pretty easy, once I took the time to learn what to do. There’s a connector CD I was supposed to create but never did. Once I downloaded it from the web, I burned the CD, I kept getting errors. Something’s not right. I may not read documentation but I can troubleshoot. It turns out that a new release has come out since I inst
alled my server software and I actually knew that, but hadn’t bothered to update.
It turns out that the setup file for the connector software is on my server, so I just connected and hit setup. Now we’re up and running. The 5 main features that WHS brings:
- Home Computer Backup and Restore
- backs up every computer in your house
- store and share files
- monitor your computers and their health
- access your files from anywhere
- stream pics, videos or audio to anywhere from your WHS
We’ve had a server for awhile, mainly a central place to dump all of our pics and other files. (R.I.P PeaceOut - your legacy lives on) PeaceOut was a Windows2000 computer with a huge hard drive…..well huge for it’s time, 160gb. WHS was choking last night because it automatically backups your entire hard drive and my laptop apparently has 105gb hard drive. I’m only using about 60gb but apparently it allocates space on the server for the entire hard drive and the backup keeps failing. I need to figure up the total disk space currently on the network, probably around 400gb, across 4 or 5 computers. I found a 500gb drive on eBay tonight for around a hundred bucks. That’s what I need, not just need, but NEED.
Network health is good to monitor, I haven’t seen that in action yet. Remote access is excellent, I haven’t figured that out yet, shouldn’t be too hard, but that will let me access the server from anywhere. I’m at Panera right now and would love to hit my server, next time for sure. Streaming media is awesome, I can run any media stored on my server from anywhere, assuming I can access the server remotely.
Remote access opens an entire world for me, it seems.
More updates as I get around to doing more, I am motivated now. Anyone have a terabyte drive they want to donate to a good cause?
