Focused Rambling – More Rambling

Interesting comments have come in on my last post and they are worth highlighting, I think.

Of course, Mary stated that she wanted a Blackberry before I wanted one and she’s probably right, but that doesn’t change my desire for wanting one too.

Bill offered a couple of tips, he mindmaps occasionally, which is something I need to understand better. (Is there good mindmapping software out there?) He also reinforces my point, just write! Just get it out there. He also seems to have a better handle on writing rough drafts, I tend to get anxious and want to post what I write immediately. I’ve got to keep telling myself that it’s ok to sit on a post for awhile and refine it, make it better and actually proofread it. I’ve got at least one post written, ready to go right now. I’ll post it soon, once I re-read it.

I would like to start writing 2 or 3 posts at a time, to always have something ready to go. I’m not there yet.

David called me on my rambling:

I love how you mentioned your problem with rambling and then you rambled in the very next paragraph. :)

Hey, I never said I was cured of rambling! David also makes a great point:

I think I try too hard to create the “very best” content and it limits both the amount of information I produce and the consistency of publishing. I’m actually considering reducing my standards a bit just to see what churns up.

I can relate, I have a similar mindset and have been trying to essentially lower my standards lately and just write. It seems that consistent writing is what draws an audience and the bigger the audience, the greater the chance of conversation.

Both David and Bill raised another point that rings true to me, as well. If what you write is read by people, then that’s a huge bonus. As I have indicated recently, I started this blog for my own benefit, not yours. I never imagined anyone would actually read what I write. That still blows me away that people keep coming back, talk about pressure!

For the record, there are times that I write things for you, the reader, but more often than you may know, I write for my benefit and you just happen to get to eavesdrop on my thoughts.

I can heartily recommend Freemind (http://sourceforge.net/projects/freemind/). I have used it for a couple of years now and have found it quite useful.

My use has been in the project management area (particularly requirements gathering) where the ability to “free-form” jot down ideas make it wonderful for brainstorming sessions. These ideas can then be linked by dragging and dropping to other areas to give better organization to the project.

I am sure the same freedom to “collect everything in your head” would be helpful to a writer as well. I may even try it!

I would have recommended FreeMind as well, I currently use MindManager, but that is only because I got a free license, I wouldn’t spend that kind of money.

I have been using a Web2.0 mind mapping tool called http://www.mindmeister.com/

I like it, especially the FireFox add-on called Geistesblitz which allows you to capture quick to do’s and thought on the fly and add them to your default mind map. This is a very nice feature.

The other one is called http://www.mindomo.com/

Both of these Web2.0 have great basic free plans which I use, and modest $4-6 a month prem. plans as well. But so far I am too cheap to pay for more than basic.

    Hope this helps.
