Tech Ministry Taking Shape

Posted on September 5, 2007 by Jim Walton

I am just beginning to gain some traction in building the tech ministry at my church. One of the first things I am doing is to build a team of ministry minded people and actually pull us all together. There’s a lot of disconnectedness and that’s what I’m working to overcome.

I have walked into a built in team, a group of people that have been at the church much longer than I have and know many of the ins and outs of how things work. Of course me, being the new guy, I tend to not be as concerned with ‘the way we’ve always done things‘ and see things from more of an outside perspective. I have suggested some things and people have outright said ‘we don’t do it like that‘ and my response is usually something like ‘I understand, but let’s give it a shot.

It’s easy to look at an existing situation, as an outsider, and think we need to scrap everything and start over. However, I think God has quickly revealed to me the value of the team that is in place. I have gotten to know these people over the last couple of months and I’m still getting to know them and although things are not perfect, there is value in the people that God already has in place. I intend to build a stronger, ministry focused team with this current team as the foundation.

I want to get away from being a bunch of people that know a lot about technology, audio, video, lighting, computers etc and become a bunch of people that are ministry minded and have a heart for Jesus first. We need skill but it’s got to start with our hearts.

Things are barely beginning to take shape and God is beginning to bless our efforts.

Good for you Jim! It’s wise to observe the team that is in place and not try to come in and make a bunch of changes. One of the key things for a team is a sense of ownership. One of the things I have appreciated about our church is that, even though we have made staff hires to oversee production areas, the keys have not been collected and just given to those few people. I’m sure you have gifted, wise volunteers in leadership roles on your team. I’m betting they will stay engaged and even grow with your approach to leadership.

This is indeed great wisdom. I am finding myself at the front end of where you are now and having to employ a lot of the same tools of wisdom. In the end it will indeed be better for all. Thanks for sharing your heart (I tend to learn a lot from you).

Take heart over ability every time. Without heart, there is no purpose. Serve in order to be served – a famous dude once said that and you’re living it out well. :)
