Interview with Rachel

Rachel and I are sitting here at McDonalds for our every other week breakfast/writing session and we are discussing how to help other churches equip kids to serve in technical areas. We decided to have me interview her.

What is your name? Rachel

What are we here to talk about today? How to help other churches equip kids to serve in technical areas

What have you done in the past in your church? I started when I was 9 and I ran EasyWorship for the children’s worship service at our last church and I did it for 10 months.

Do you think all 9 year olds can do this or are you just exceptionally talented? I’m just exceptionally talented…no, I’m joking, but some 9 year olds could.

In general, what do you think would be a good age to allow someone to start doing EasyWorship? Between 9 and 11, it depends on how mature the kid is.

Is there value to a church training and equipping it’s kids to serve in this way, in other words, what’s in it for the church? You get more help so you don’t have to do it as often and you are training the future of the church.

At our last church, we had something called CrossTraining, which was designed to equip 3rd thru 6th graders to learn different ways to serve in the church. What were some of the different areas and share what classes you took? I took drama and something like creative worship, which was dancing and singing. There was also sign language, puppets, tech, leadership which was for 5th and 6th graders, and other things that I really don’t remember.

In the 2 years that you were able to take part in CrossTraining, you refused to take your Dad’s tech class. Why?? I knew how to do it, in fact, I was already doing it. At that time, I wasn’t really interested in learning how to run sound but now I am.

The real question here is how can churches equip kids to learn to serve in technical ways. How can this happen? You give them the opportunity to learn to serve.

Do you think CrossTraining was a good way to do that? Yes, because it lets them try different things to see what they like best.

Would you share more about what you know about CrossTraining if people wanted to learn more about that for their church? Yes.

Are we done? Yes.
