First Work Night Tonight

Tonight I’m having my first work night at church for the tech team.  We are no different, there are about a million things to take care of around the church when it comes to technology and I am working right now to try and be intentional in all that we do, which includes spending some time addressing various needs.

This group of people that is involved fascinates me, the youngest member of the team is 11 years old, she’s also a well known writer, among other things and we have a pretty broad age range of adults as well.

We will be addressing the following:

  • Pull the projectors down and clean them
  • Fix the TV monitors on stage, the display is off the bottom of the screen
  • Make magnetic labels on the sound board for the channels
  • Wire the lobby speakers so they can be controlled from the sound board
  • Hook up a new PC in the sound booth
  • Clean up a recently replaced, aged computer to see if we can salvage it and get some more use out of it.

If we get all of that done tonight, I’ll feel good, but that’s not my goal.  We’ll start with this list and work our way through it.  Other long term tasks include:

  • Inventory all hardware and software
  • Establish a somewhat standard image
  • Replace spotlights and floodlights, install gels and aim them better
  • many many many other things

Tonight there will be 5 of us and we’ll work from 6:30 until 8 or 9.  Two of the five tonight are high schoolers, plus the rest of us have to work tomorrow, so I’m not looking to stay late, although I easily could.  We’ll start here and see where it goes.

Also, we’ll sit down for a few minutes and just chat about what we are about and where we are going, I want us to start with the right focus.  So, it will be fun.  I’m thinking we might do this every other week, but with the holidays upon us, it will probably be sporadic until the new year.

You may want to look at Spiceworks to help with tthe hardware/software inventory, it is free and worked great for us.

  2. Right on! We’ve done this weekly for about three or four years. Dubbed “Nerd Night”, it’s intention is to build community for people who feel lead to exercise gifts in technology or technology-related areas. It’s a great forum to dream about what might be possible, think about what’s likely and deal with what is. We underpin the evening with donuts and decaff coffee. The result has been that we are much more intentional and thoughtful about what we’re doing, how we do it and what we want to achieve.

You’ve got a varied crew and that’s great – Go Bro!
