Man on the Street Video

Posted on January 13, 2008

Today, after lunch, Brett and I went out and hit the street, armed with a video camera and smile.  Well, we were dressed but it was our first attempt at this sort of thing.

I have wanted to do this for awhile but had not found the right front man, until today.  Our current sermon series is on Philippians, specifically on laughter and joy, so we set out to ask the question “What makes you happy?”, “What brings you joy?” and anything else that came to mind.  It went well for our first time out, we first zeroed in on a homeless man named Jason and had quite a long talk with him.  He was very interesting and the thing that made him happy was his freedom, among other things.  Freedom, as in out of jail.  Don’t know what he was in for, didn’t ask, but he seemed like a nice guy.

We got probably a dozen no’s, people were in a hurry, not interested in being on camera and one guy was too tired.  We found a nice lady at the mall who talked to us and answered our questions.  Then we headed back to church and reviewed our footage, then grabbed some likely suspects as they entered the building.

It was great, over the next week, I’ll be mixing this video and next Sunday afternoon Brett and I will finalize things and figure out how to use it.  We have a little over 20 minutes of footage, yet it seemed like we shot about twice as much.  I think we can make about 3 separate 2-3 minute videos, but we’ll see.   It may actually be one quality 2 minute video and let the rest go.  We’ll probably keep the rest on file and use at a later date.

We’ll do this again.  After returning to church, we agreed that when the temperature on the street was above 10 (F) we would find more people on the street.

Thanks to Darrell for pointing me back to the links he referred me to originally!
