EasyWorship headaches

Posted on February 14, 2008

I think we set ourselves up for what happened last night.

We use EasyWorship for our adult worship services and also the youth use it on Wednesday night and the EasyWorship database is stored on a shared network drive that both areas access. EasyWorship is very exclusive as it only allows one computer to access the database at a time and generally that is not an issue. However, last night, the band practiced, so Mary was there to get a jump on setting things up for Sunday morning and I was there doing some other, unrelated things. Mary opened EasyWorship and immediately things were not right, so she messed with it for awhile, then I got in there and dug deeper.

I ended up staying late and working on it and every once in awhile, I would get an error saying someone else had the database opened exclusively, then it dawned on me that the youth would have been in there earlier. Also, there was a time a couple months ago where I had EasyWorship running on my laptop and my battery died, so it shut down, but essentially EasyWorship was still running and still had the database locked. The next day, someone tried to open EasyWorship and could not. I had to bring my laptop back in, turn it on and close EasyWorship to free up the database.

So, last night, I walked down to the chapel to get on the laptop that the youth uses but didn’t discover anything unusual. Over the years, we have accumulated a lot of junk within EasyWorship, songs we will never use, backgrounds we will never use again, so where it stands right now, we have an opportunity to start over and that’s not a bad thing.

I knew the way we did EasyWorship was not the best practice but it was one of many, many tasks on my plate and it wasn’t a priority. One thing that has changed is someone in the office you to prepare the schedules during the week and in the last few weeks, I have taken that task on. So, it’s not necessary for EasyWorship to be available anywhere except the specific computer it needs to be on. Plus, I can access that computer remotely if I need to.

I also intend to be more diligent about backing our data up. At this point, nothing is ready for Sunday, that will happen on Saturday.

It’s a new day and we have a clean slate!

    I understand the feeling

Yep, me too. We run ProPresenter, and I’m really considering making it a part of my Presentation Operator’s job to clear out and delete all of the files used for that weekend so that it’s always ready for the next service (and so I don’t have to do it).

BTW, Jim, I unsubscribed from your blog, mainly because I like coming here (which I do every day), and by the time I get the email, I’ve already been to your blog, so don’t be hatin! Do you have an ultra-cyberdork feature that might notify me every fifteen minutes or so as to whether or not you have a new post? If so, I’ll take it.

We use MediaShout at Resurrection and Living Water. We’ve never had an issue multiple people accessing the data simultaneously on a regular basis. It’s expensive, but at least doesn’t have that issue. Something to think about.

Sounds like you might want to make the leap. I’m a bit biased though. Mediashout does everything we need it to, and more.

We use EasyWorship and lost the entire book of Psalms. Can’t get it back. Any suggestions.

Can you un-install, then re-install Easy Worship? That’s my first thought. Also, you might try calling their support, I have done that and gotten good help.

That’s where I would start, I hope this helps.

How we use it out our church is that each computer has its own database and we make the schedule for each service on one computer and then save it to a NAS (Network Attached Storage) and EasyWorship reads the songs from the schedule rather then the database.

We started using EasyWorship several years ago, but only started using it last year with our youth. We copied the adult database and then have maintained two separate databases because most worship leaders do songs differently and it is easier to keep the settings different by doing so.
