Busy day at church
Posted on February 20, 2008
Yesterday is a day I had been planning on for quite some time. At first, I was just going to take a couple of hours of off work but it quickly became apparent that I needed the whole day, and then some. I took the day off so I could get some work done at church.
There are several projects that I am in the middle of and yesterday was very productive. The day started out at 6am and men’s Bible study, then I had to set up my green screen, camera and lights. I didn’t exactly get finished when Chris tracked me down so we could talk new equipment. We are equipping 3 worship areas with new A/V/L gear and I think we have finally hashed everything out.
Next was staff meeting, where Mary and I presented the new website to the staff. Our go-live date is still 3-4 weeks out, but it was good to let them see it and begin talking about their role in this going forward. Did you know it’s hard to get staff to write content for their section of the site? That’s why I wrote all of the content on the site! I told them if they didn’t like it, then they could now rewrite it.
After that, I went over the new Tech Team procedures for desktop support, I’ll share that here soon. It’s a process that should eliminate any questions about what we are doing and protect the tech team and most importantly, me!
After lunch, I started recruiting people to shoot their video, a 1-2 minute video of each pastor talking about their area. People sure don’t like to be in front of the camera! I got everyone in, though. Off and on throughout the day, I was hoping to get a new laptop configured but the screen was black the entire time. The external screen works great but not the laptop itself. I finally put a call into Dell. This is the first Dell I have purchased for this church, officially, and I’m thankful I didn’t skimp on the gold support. I’ll get that resolved tonight.
I also called Kevin at SoundsGreat to discuss the final tweaks on his quotes. I’ll e-mail him today with the details, then it’s go time! Mary and the girls came in about that time and I got to see them for a few minutes.
By the time they left, the church was quiet and I tore down my screen and lights and once that was done, I had less than an hour before tech team, so I just hung out and installed the new 2gb of memory that came in today, which is very nice! I don’t really notice it yet but I will with video editing.
The entire tech team was wiped out so we sat and chatted for awhile. I shared our new process with them, then we got busy. I set Daniel loose on the server to master Spiceworks, which he did. The rest of us renamed 3 computers and were able to add them to the inventory in Spiceworks. Next week, we will blow through the rest of the computers in the office and get them renamed, then the bulk of our inventory will be done. Afterwards, Daniel and I hung out and discussed some new ideas, then we headed out about 10.
That concluded my 16 hour day! I was exhausted when I got home but it felt so good. If only every day was like that, but for now, it’s back to the office.

What kind of lights do you have for video? I would like to get some, but do not have a bunch of $$ to spend.
I bought these lights here, they cost about $80 on eBay.
They worked really well, I had never used umbrella lights before. I bought the muslin green screen off of eBay too, then built a frame out of PVC, the frame cost less than $10!
Well so much for the day of rest eh? It is funny I saw the title of your article and it was clse to the same as one I wrote on Feb 15th Called The Busy Church Life http://churchithelp.com/blog/?p=165
I think you might appreciate the cartoon I did for it. I’m so lucky to work at one church and attend another. Keep up the great posts and get some rest!
[...] In the high level review I gave the other day, I mentioned that we installed Spiceworks and it was pretty cool. This afternoon, I get a call from my buddy Kirk Longhofer and he is almost more excited about Spiceworks than I am. He had been looking for a utility like this for a long time and I know first hand that he has a lot more to keep track of than I do. As of this afternoon, Kirk had spent more time on Spiceworks than I had and he explained some things to me about what the software can do. Since I let Daniel set it up and play with it initially, I had just barely looked at it and definitely hadn’t played around with it. [...]
