PC Workshop - Tomorrow

Posted on March 7, 2008

Saturday March 8, we will be having another PC Workshop at Fairview Christian Church.  It wasn’t highly publicized so I have been expecting a low turnout but several people have told me they plan to bring their ailing computers in for us to look at.  So, I really expect a busy day.

These workshops get more fun the more we do them.  People are understanding what it’s about and more people are involved and it’s a fun time.

I will be publishing documents soon with guidelines of how I run this event, how I set it up and what information I gather from people because I know there is interest in how to pull one of these off.

Actually, it’s really quite simple:

  • get the word out of the time and place
  • set up a few monitors, keyboards and mice
  • get a few other somewhat geeky volunteers together
  • have fun

It really becomes what you make it and since I’m pretty simple minded, I tend to create and run things in a simple fashion.   I encourage people to hang around and we chat and get to know each other, plus as you work on their computer, you can ask them questions about what is going on with their computer and show teach them how to take better care of their computer.

I also see it as an outreach.  Many people will not come to church at all, yet if a friend tells them they can have their computer fixed for free, they are in church.  Now, me and my tech team have a chance to get to know these people and begin to give them a different view of the Church.  There’s no preaching or condemning, it’s all about relationships.

If you are in the area, come on by!
