PC Workshop Recap

Posted on March 11, 2008

The lesson learned here is once you get in the routine of doing PC Workshops, people will come.  We had very little publicity but word of mouth is powerful, which resulted in the busiest event we have had, by far.

At first, Rachel and I were the only ones there, and I was still thinking it would be a slow day.  It didn’t take long for things to pick up.  At our busiest moment, we had 4 desktops going and 5 laptops and 2 more desktops waiting, it was insane.   There were 5 of us available to work on them and as usual, we tended to rotate from machine to machine.  We had a fairly good success rate and I think everyone was satisfied with what we were able to do.

Thankfully, people were patient because it takes time to  do the things that we do, which include:

  • Uninstall expired anti-virus programs
  • Install AVG
  • Install SpyBot
  • Install C-Cleaner
  • Format and/or reinstall XP

People are welcome drop their PC off and leave but most hang around and chat.  That helps because they can help us work through their issues.

We tried to add a new element, live video streaming, which we had up for awhile but then it crashed and burned.  Earlier that morning, I was watching Jason’s live stream of their rewiring inspired me.  I still wasn’t convinced, but Daniel and I talked about it and we got it set up.  It was up for awhile but finally tanked.  Next time, the goal will be to have a live video stream, then you can watch and listen to us in action.

I think some Tuesday evening, we will setup a live feed for our Tech Team meeting, just for fun.  We tried it again Sunday morning with even less success.  We need to understand our issues with Ustream, but we will overcome.  I almost think it may be a camera issue.

Mark your calendars, next PC Workshop: May 10
