4 Ways That Blogging Can Change Your Church

I just came across this great article at Lifeway written by Ken Gosnell titled ‘4 ways blogging can change your church‘. It spins off of the April 5 Business Week article on corporate blogging and boils down the specifics of how blogging can change your church into these 4 points:
- Blogging will bring churches closer together as it closes a communication gap
- Blogging will help to develop sermons and classes
- Blogging will break down barriers and remove masks
- Blogging will help the church to engage the culture.
I agree with his points, and I am intrigued by the second point, Ken elaborates:
Now, a preacher will be able to post a sermon idea at the beginning of the week and have the congregation respond so that when he delivers the sermon he will have brought many along for the ride.
This adds a whole new element to the pastor’s message. He can post the topic of the upcoming message, with some scripture, and at the very least, people could study that week in preparation for the sermon. However, as Ken points out, the post could be used to have thoughts and ideas posted and that could add some perspective to a sermon. I can really see good and bad to this approach, the bad side of it may be the certain people that might steer an idea to a different conclusion or attempt to cause controversy. The thing about blogging is nothing is set in stone, things have to be tried and if they don’t work, then tweak it to make improvements. It would be interesting to see this concept applied by a pastor or a church and get a feel for the results. If it doesn’t work, change it……no big deal. I have always thought it was a good idea to be able to know something about next week’s message, such as scripture to be used. That is an easy thing to put on a church website, of course you have to keep up with it each week. Blogging definitely opens up communication in any organization and it will give a feel for the culture that the church is trying to reach.
